A child’s baby teeth are only in place for a few short years; however, they are influential to their oral and general development. Not to mention, they set the foundation for their adult teeth, which is why early oral hygiene habits are important. Besides brushing and flossing, children should have a cleaning and checkup every 6 months, beginning before their first birthday. The dentist can be a scary place and getting your child to brush before bed can be a nightly battle. You can teach your child a lifetime of good oral habits and win the brushing battle with 5 dentist-approved toys.
1. Crocodile Teeth Game
The funny little toy is good for more than just a startle. If your child presses on a “bad” tooth, the crocodile will snap its mouth closed and they are out of the game. Besides spending quality time with your little one, it is a great opportunity to have a conversation about ways teeth can “go bad,” and what they can do to avoid a toothache.
2. Toy Dentist’s Kit
Many children have a doctor’s kit with medical toys, like a stethoscope, thermometer, or bandaids, but there are also play sets for dentists. Your child can learn about different instruments that will be used during their cleaning and checkup. They can use their imagination while making their upcoming appointment less scary.
3. Cool Timers
The American Dental Association recommends brushing in the morning and at night for at least 2 minutes, which can seem like an eternity for small children. Rushing through their brushing routine will leave cavity-causing residue and food particles on their teeth. You can ensure they are brushing enough with fun little timers.
4. Electric Toothbrush
Although technically not a toy, an electric toothbrush will get your child excited about brushing because they come in many fun colors and characters. Allow your child to choose one that has earned the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. Look for soft bristles and ensure the brush head accommodates the size of their mouth. You can also choose toothbrushes with certain features, like a built-in timer or pressure sensor.
5. Books
Turn story time into an educational experience with children’s books about dentistry, like The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss or The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan and Jan Berenstain. Your child will get to learn about the importance of keeping their teeth and gums healthy to support a lifelong commitment to their dental health.
Besides good home oral hygiene, limit your child’s consumption of sugary foods and drinks to promote a cavity-free smile. Schedule a cleaning and checkup with their pediatric dentist every 6 months for a healthy smile that lasts.
